While we can’t predict when the next bout of severe weather may strike, we can take steps to be prepared.
Prepare An Emergency Kit
Do a little research and find out the specific types of hazardous weather that affect the area you live in, and create an emergency kit with these weather threats in mind.
If you don’t currently have an Emergency Prep Kit, consider putting one together this year during Texas’ Emergency Preparedness Tax Holiday.
Texas’ Comptroller office has announced that Texans can purchase certain emergency prep. items tax free during the April 28-30 holiday. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items a person can purchase.
Qualifying Items for the Tax Holiday fall into 3 price categories & include: First Aid Kits, Hatchets, Axes, Mobile Device Chargers, Fuel Containers costing less than $75; Hurricane Shutters costing less than $300; and Portable Generators costing less than $3,000. Visit the Texas Comptroller Website for more information and detailed item listings.
Have A Plan
It’s often overlooked, but it’s important to make sure everyone in your household knows what to do and where to go in case of severe weather.
Develop an emergency plan based on your local weather hazards and practice it. Also be sure to include a communications plan with your family before severe weather hits.
Along with getting your emergency kit prepped and plan set, you should also make sure you have the right insurance to protect you, you family, and property.
Is your area prone to flooding? Make sure you have a flood policy in place. Be aware that Flood Coverage is not included Homeowners, Renters, or Business Property policy. Also keep in mind that all Flood Insurance Policies take 30 days to go into effect before coverage will apply.
