This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Jamin B. Nitsche Memorial Endowment Fund, a scholarship fund that has had a tremendous impact on the lives of hundreds of college students—many now adults and business owners— in Texas.
To date, the Jamin B. Nitsche Memorial Endowment Fund along with the Linda B. Nitsche Memorial Endowment Fund has awarded a total of $1,034,000 to 326 students, with funds administered by The Legacy Deo formerly the Lutheran Foundation of Texas.
This year, $47,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to 2019 graduates, with recipients able to renew their scholarships each year up to four years.
Where The Memorial Endowments Began
The Jamin B. Nitsche Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in May 1989. The Fund honors the memory of sixteen-year-old Jamin Nitsche, who lost his life in an automobile accident in Lee County on March 25 of that year.
Jamin was a student at Giddings High School at the time of his death. He played football, basketball, golf, and ran track. He and his family were active members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings. He possessed natural leadership qualities, was well-liked by his peers, and had a bright future.
R.J., Linda and their son Robert, began this fund not only to honor Jamin, but also to ensure that something positive would result from this tragedy.
Determined to turn the life-changing tragedy into something positive, R.J., Linda and son Robert- with the help of their family, friends, employees, and business associates- established the Jamin B. Nitsche Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor Jamin’s memory. The scholarship’s purpose is to encourage students to abstain from alcohol, illegal drugs, and to foster their commitment to their faith.
Shortly after the first scholarships were distributed in mid-1990, another tragedy struck the Nitsche family. On October 25, 1990, Linda was killed in an automobile accident.
Although this was a devastating blow to R.J. and Robert, their faith strengthened them and allowed them to move forward despite their grief. In December 1990, R.J. and Robert established the Linda Barrett Nitsche Memorial Endowment Fund.
A statement from the Linda Barrett Fund agreement reads:
“The funds shall be disbursed to students with demonstrated financial need and scholarship ability and have expressed an earnest desire to accomplish the work of our Lord Jesus Christ here on Earth, either through full-time church work in the LCMS or through involvement in the Christian church on Earth as a lay member of the Christian Church.”
