Recovery After The Storm

The worst of the storm has cleared, but many Texans are now dealing with damage to their homes, vehicles, and businesses.

Don’t know where to begin? We’ve got some tips to help you get started.

Immediately after the Storm – Stay Safe

Make safety a top priority. Look out for broken windows, downed trees and power lines.

If you must go into areas with damage, wear proper shoes, gloves, and clothing that protects you.

Keep an eye out for broken glass, sharp objects, and live electric wires.

Don’t use any electrical equipment that is rain-soaked or in standing water.

Contact Your Insurance Agent

Each insurer has its own set of rules on how to file a claim, and they work on a first-come-first-served basis, so you need to get the process started quickly. Your agent will be your advocate throughout the process.

Check your insurance policy and confirm your coverage for different types of damage.

Find out the time limit on filing claims and notify your insurance agent in writing of the damage as soon as possible.

Make Temporary Repairs

If you have hail damage to the roof of your property or your car, it is your responsibility to take action to prevent further damage

Cover Broken Windows & Holes in roofs with tarps or plywood to prevent water damage.

Move wet items to a dry spot.

Save all receipts from your temporary repairs. Your Insurance Policy should reimburse you for these expenses.

Have a professional to help if the work is beyond your area of expertise. You want this work done right.

Document the Damage

Make a complete list of items that the storm damaged. This will help expedite the claims process.

Take pictures and video if possible of any damaged property.

Don’t throw out damaged items, especially expensive items. Keep them until you are instructed by your insurance company.

Schedule Repairs

Most insurance companies require that you to wait until the damage to your property has been assessed by a claims representative before you begin making permanent repairs.

However, you should reach out to a contractor to make permanent repairs as soon as possible because contractors can be difficult to schedule after a storm.

Go Over Your Policy

A home insurance policy typically covers the cost to repair common hail damage, including damage to roofs, walls and cars, and your inventory or belongings. However, your deductible does apply, and you may have a higher deductible for wind/hail damage on your policy.

Check your policy to see what’s covered and the deductible you’ve chosen. Reviewing your policy will help you prepare questions for your claims professional.

What to Expect with Repair & Replacement

Your insurance company will pay to replace damaged items and materials with the same type and quality of materials you had before the storm. Insurance makes sure your property returns to the same state it was before your claim, no better and no worse.

For example, if you had a fiberglass roof, they will pay to repair or replace damage with fiberglass materials, but they won’t pay to replace it with more expensive slate tile. If you want to pay the additional expense to upgrade, you’re welcome to do so out of your personal budget.

What To Expect From Your Insurance Company

Once you have made a claim, the company will send you the necessary claim forms. Properly fill the forms out to avoid delays.

Your company will send out an adjuster to inspect your home. Make a list of the damage to your home and property that you would like to show the adjuster.

Once you and your insurance company agree on the terms of your settlement, state laws require that your payment is sent promptly.
