If you’re renting a space —whether it be a condo, apartment, house, barndominium, or modular home— you should have renters insurance.
Many renters think, “Well, my landlord has insurance, so I’m covered.”
Unfortunately, your landlord’s insurance ONLY covers their rental structure & property, but none of your personal things.
That means if a pipe busts and floods your place, the landlord’s insurance will cover the cost to repair the building, but not cost to replace your new laptop that was ruined by the tsunami that washed through your living room.
Renters insurance, on the other hand, covers your personally owned belongings from all events that are listed in the policy— such as fire, smoke, water damage, windstorms, lightning, theft and vandalism.
So if the walls of your apartment do spring a leak, your boot collection is covered.
Even if you don’t think your stuff is worth all that much, renters insurance is a good idea. The cost of replacing just a basic wardrobe and only a few pieces of furniture adds up quickly.
And – Renters Insurance is pretty cheap as far as coverage comes. Some carriers even provide it free when you bundle with another line of coverage, like auto insurance.
