Severe Weather Preparation

May 7, 2019

While we can’t predict when the next bout of severe weather may strike, we can take steps to be prepared.

Create An Emergency Kit

Do a little research and find out the specific types of hazardous weather that affect the area you live in, and create an emergency kit with these weather threats in mind.

Things you should put in a basic supply kit include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Emergency radio.
  • First aid kit.
  • Whistle, to alert people to your location.
  • Personal sanitation products, such as garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, and wet wipes.
  • Plastic tarps
  • Extra clothes.
  • Dusk masks.
  • Utility shut off tools.

Have A Plan

It’s often overlooked, but it’s important to make sure everyone in your household knows what to do, where to go, and how to stay safe if severe weather hits.

Develop an emergency plan based on your local weather hazards and practice it. Also be sure to include an evacuation and communication plan with your family.

Stay Informed

Check the forecast regularly to see if you’re at risk for severe weather. If severe weather is in the forecast, listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about severe weather watches and warnings.

Check on family and friends to ensure everyone is aware of the severe weather, and remind them of your emergency plan.

Get Covered

Along with getting your emergency kit prepped and plan set, you should also make sure you have the right insurance to protect you, you family, and property.

Is your area prone to flooding? Make sure you have a flood policy in place. Be aware that Flood Coverage is not included Homeowners, Renters, or Business Property policy. Also keep in mind that all Flood Insurance Policies take 30 days to go into effect before coverage will apply.
