Watercraft Safety Tips

May 26, 2017

If you plan to hit the water this Memorial Day, play it safe!

Many, if not most, water-related accidents can be avoided by taking the proper safety measures. Here are some tips to help ensure you, your loved ones and others celebrating around you enjoy a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day this weekend:

Check the Weather Forecast. A calm, sunny day can quickly turn into a severe storm. Check the weather forecast before venturing out.

Get Your Vessel Checked for Free. The Coast Guard and many other organizations are happy to inspect your boat to see if it’s fit for the water and also to make sure you’re not missing any essential items.

Turn off Your Engine While Idling. More and more people are succumbing to Carbon Monoxide poisoning while near idling boats. Never let passengers hang off the back of the boat or platform (Teak Surf) while it’s running.

Check for Fumes after Filling Up. After filling up, be sure you ventilate the cabin before starting the engine.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector. Just like autos, internal combustion engines on boats emit a harmful, odorless gas called carbon monoxide.

Create a Float Plan. Tell a friend or relative, or even a local marina, where you and your passengers are going and how long you’ll be gone.

Designate an Assistant Skipper. Make sure that more than one person on board knows how to drive the boat and work it properly.

Operate at a Safe Speed. Excessive speed is a leading cause of all reported boating accidents.

Don’t Drink and Boat. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating while intoxicated (BWI) is a top cause of fatal boating accidents.

Wear a Life Jacket. 70% of all boating accident victims would be alive today if they had worn a life jacket.  Read More Life Jacket Tips Here.

Keep a Close Eye on The Kids. Stay close and keep your eyes on your kids. It only takes a moment for a child to slip below the surface.

Watch out for Other Watercraft. Maintain a 50-foot distance from other PWC’s, vessels, persons, shore, or stationary platform or another object unless operating at headway (idle) speed.

Take a safe boating course. No excuses.
